Why a Geraldton specialist

Three things every Geraldton paving job has to get right.

Coastal wind and salt scour.

The Geraldton sea breeze, the famous Geraldton Doctor, blows almost every summer afternoon and carries salt well inland to Wandina and Deepdale. That wind scours loose jointing sand out of paving joints within a season, and the salt attacks weak pavers and unsealed limestone. We use stabilised or polymeric jointing sand, a compacted sub-base that does not pump fines, and salt-tolerant pavers near the coast. It is the single most common reason older Geraldton paving fails.

Reactive and sandy Mid West soils.

Geraldton sits on a mix of coastal sand and reactive clay loam. Sand drains fast but moves under load if the sub-base is thin; reactive clay near Utakarra and Rangeway swells and shrinks with the wet and dry seasons. The fix is the same either way: excavate to firm ground, lay and compact the right depth of road base, and restrain every edge. Paving laid straight onto soft sand or untested clay ruts, dips and lifts within a few years.

Retaining wall permits and engineering.

On the sloping blocks around Mount Tarcoola, Bluff Point and Beresford, a retaining wall is structural, not decorative. Under WA's Building Act and the City of Greater Geraldton's local policy, any wall over 500mm high, or any wall holding back a driveway, a pool or a neighbour's soil, needs a building permit and an engineer's design to AS 4678. We size the footing, the block and the drainage, and lodge the paperwork so the wall is certified, not a future liability.

Frequently asked questions

How much does paving cost in Geraldton in 2026?

Standard concrete pavers run $75 to $110 per square metre supplied and laid, clay brick paving $95 to $140, and Geraldton limestone or reconstituted limestone $110 to $170. A typical 45 square metre double driveway in Wandina or Mount Tarcoola runs $5,500 to $9,500. Full breakdown on the pricing page and the paving cost guide.

Do I need council approval for paving or a retaining wall?

Flat paving over a stable base generally needs no permit. A retaining wall over 500mm high, or one holding back a driveway, pool or neighbour's soil, needs a building permit and engineer's design from the City of Greater Geraldton. We confirm the trigger height and lodge it where required.

What paving handles Geraldton's coastal wind and salt best?

The weak point is the jointing sand and base, not usually the paver. We use stabilised or polymeric jointing sand, a compacted road-base sub-base and salt-tolerant pavers such as dense clay brick or sealed limestone near the coast. More detail on the coastal wind paving guide.

How long does a paving job take?

A 30 to 50 square metre driveway or courtyard takes three to five working days. Pool surrounds and limestone work take a little longer for cutting; retaining walls add footing cure time. Strong Geraldton wind is the main schedule variable.
