Wandina is family Geraldton, full of newer brick-and-tile homes on neat blocks with the pool, the alfresco and the double driveway that go with them. Most Wandina paving jobs are part of finishing off a newer home. The builder handed over the house and a patch of dirt, and now the owners want the double driveway, the alfresco off the back, and often a pool surround to match. We are happy to stage these or do them together. Doing the driveway and alfresco in one visit usually saves on mobilisation and gives a consistent finish across the block.
Reactive soil under newer estates.
A lot of Wandina sits on reactive clay loam that swells and shrinks between the wet winter and the long dry summer. On a new estate block the ground around the slab can also be loose fill that was never properly compacted. Either way, the discipline is the same: we excavate to firm ground, lay and compact the right depth of road base, and restrain every edge. Paving laid straight onto soft builder's fill is the classic reason a Wandina driveway dips and lifts within a couple of years.
Pools and the summer that uses them.
With Geraldton summers running hot and dry from October to April, a huge share of Wandina homes have a backyard pool, and the surround does the hardest job of any paving on the block. It has to be non-slip with wet feet on it, cool enough to stand on in the afternoon sun, and able to shrug off constant salt-chlorine splash-out. We lay sealed limestone and textured pavers for exactly this, with the falls set so water always runs away from the shell and the house.
